What did it mean to live in Morocco as a young woman in 2016?
Since the Moudawana family law was passed in 2004, women have theoretically experienced more self-determination and participated in public life. Among other things, the woman’s duty of obedience to her husband was abolished and the minimum age for marriage was raised from 15 to 18 years. While some women shape their own lives, it is still difficult for others to find a new perspective in their lives under social pressure.
The women who are about 20 years old today represent the first generation to grow up as young women since the law was changed.
What does life look like for the next generation?
Especially for the girls who grow up in women’s shelters?
This question cannot be answered. But the desire to lead a self-determined life connects women across generations and borders.
